My dad, Joseph W. Hartung Sr. was born on July 13, 1923, to George and
Margret Hartung, native Staten Islanders in the Westerleigh area
and grew up on the family farm on Watchogue Road. He attended P. S. 30
and McKee High School.

My dad met my mom, Anne, in 1942 at a skating rink in Jersey City, New Jersey. He married my mom, on February 13, 1943 and enlisted into the army two weeks later.

My dad served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945, as a private during WW II in the Philippines and was wounded, receiving the Purple Heart.

After serving, he and my mom settled in Bulls Head and had three children: Carolynn, Peggy, and Joey. My dad worked for over 40 years at the American Cyanamid company in Linden NJ. He also loved being an auto mechanic.

They relocated in 1960 in Port Richmond (La Forge Ave) to raise his children. My dad had a nickname “Charlie;” because he could never remember everyone’s names, so he called everybody Charlie. He enjoyed gardening (especially tomatoes), fishing, and football (Giants fan). My dad had 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

My dad was a member of the Assumption Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Alhambra’s, the brother group to the Sultans. He was also a member of the Staten Island Disabled American Veterans Elm Park.
My dad passed on May 30, 1999 at age 75.
