Son of Irish Immigrants, Mark and Elizabeth (McLoughlin) Codd, Francis A. Codd was a Saint Peter’s High School graduate. His older brothers were Michael J Codd (Former NYPD Police Commissioner, WW II Army Veteran), Mark Codd (WW II Navy Veteran), John Codd (WW II Marine Veteran), Edward Codd (WW II Army Veteran), Bernard P Codd (Korean War Veteran), Thomas Codd, and Bartholomew Codd. His sisters were Elizabeth (Codd) O’Connor and Catherine (Codd) Breen.
Francis married Joan (Fromwiller) in spring of 1953 while on leave before being sent to Korea.
Second Lieutenant Codd was a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. On 11 June 1953, his unit was directed to serve as infantry. While leading his unit on an attack of enemy positions near Yangji-ri, North Korea, during the Battle of Outpost Harry, he was Killed in Action by enemy artillery fire. He was 23 years old.
Francis died 3 weeks before the end of the war. He left behind a pregnant widow. His daughter was born in December 1953. (Frances Codd Denninger, deceased 2021).
Second Lieutenant Codd was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
