Harry Lee

U.S. Navy
1961-1967
Cuban Missile Crisis

Harry Lee, a proud Staten Island native, was born, raised, and continues to reside in the borough with his beloved wife, Lucille, with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together, they have raised five children and are the proud grandparents of eight.

In 1961, Harry answered the call to serve by enlisting in the United States Navy, inspired by the heroic tales of his father, a World War II Pearl Harbor survivor. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, he sought not only to honor his family’s legacy but also to experience the world and protect the nation he loves. Harry served as a Seaman on the Deck Force aboard the USS *Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.*, a Gearing-class destroyer renowned for its service in critical moments of history.

During his time aboard the *Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.*, Harry played a vital role in the naval blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a pivotal moment in Cold War history. His service during this tense period exemplified his courage and commitment to duty.

Even decades after his military service, Harry’s dedication to the Navy remained steadfast. At the age of 65, he visited a Navy recruiter with hopes of re-enlisting—a testament to his unwavering devotion to the uniform and the values it represents.

After his time in the Navy, Harry transitioned into civilian life as a truck driver-- a career he pursued with pride for 50 years.

Now retired, Harry enjoys a well-earned life of leisure. He finds joy in gardening, cooking, and cherishes time spent with his close-knit circle of family and friends. Harry continues to inspire all who know him, embodying the values of service and community in every chapter of his remarkable life.
