Maurice “Cookie” Greco

Born in 1931 to Louis & Dea Greco, Maurice “Cookie” Greco was raised on Blackford Ave along with his brother Louis (Junie), and sister Carol. He was given the nickname “Cookie” by his Godmother when he was 2 months old, and he was known as Cookie his entire life.

A lifelong Port Richmond resident, Cookie graduated from PRHS in 1949. He began working for A&P Supermarkets, and in 1952 he was drafted. He proudly served in the U. S. Army from 1952-1954, achieving the rank of corporal and serving as a Military Police Officer. Just prior to being discharged, he met Diane Dunn, whose family was also stationed on the base.

He returned to Port Richmond and his job at A&P Supermarkets, eventually working in all the Staten Island locations over 15 years. One day, Diane Dunn’s mother ran into Cookie while food shopping, and the families became reacquainted. He married Diane Dunn in 1959, and Cookie always said, “it was meant to be”. They eventually settled on Homestead Ave. with their two children, Lisa & Lori. He continued his life of service, becoming a NYC Fireman in 1966, retiring from Engine 282 in 1991. On duty or not, he helped countless people over the years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, he always had a smile on his face, and he was always kind.

He remained close to his childhood friends over the years. He loved playing bocce behind Denino’s, and playing pinochle with his friends. He played softball for the Firehouse team, pitching a shutout at 60 years of age. He took pride in decorating the house for every holiday, Christmas being his favorite. His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren, as well as his sister Carol’s grandchildren.

Cookie was a well-loved man, who was very proud of his Port Richmond roots. Sadly he passed in 2013, but he will never be forgotten.
