John Aloia
U.S. Army
1950s
John was the oldest of three brothers. He was born in Manhattan, lived in Brooklyn in his 20’s, and moved to Great Kills in 1969. He did not come from a military family but chose to enlist in the Army for two years. Although he was not involved in any conflict, John chose the U.S. Army for the experience and extra influence that it could provide. While in the army, he became friends with the singer and actor Vic Damone who would play his guitar and sing for the soldiers.
My father John Aloia was an extremely good man. He had a very high work ethic and was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal service in Manhattan for over 30 years. He worked hard and efficiently to give us the things he never had. A devoted family man, he gave me a very solid, firm and strong mind.
His other qualities were a creative sense of humor, diligent, enjoyed kind people and wanted us to have friends. Some extra things about him were listening to music, watching television-especially with a short wave radio, photography, spending time with his family, taking care of the house, horseback riding, etc.
I miss him but I know he is at rest.
