Port Richmond Celebrates Legacy of Victor Scalici Lifelong Resident and Business Owner

On Saturday, October 4th, 2025, Nearly 100 community members gathered Saturday, Oct. 4, at the corner of Port Richmond Avenue and Hooker Place to honor the late Victor Scalici, a lifelong Staten Island resident and business owner, with a street co-naming ceremony recognizing his decades of service to the neighborhood.
Quotes from Business leaders and Community organizers:
Mike Burke, co-owner of Denino’s Tavern and Restaurant, spoke about the importance of honoring the people who built the neighborhood’s foundation.
“It’s important that we remember the people who built this neighborhood and gave so much of themselves to make Port Richmond what it is today,” he said.
Councilmember Kamillah Hanks 49th District of Staten Island:
Councilmember Kamillah Hanks sponsored the co-naming, and Thomas Pagliuca, a representative from her office, delivered a formal dedication on her behalf to honor Scalici, remembered for the values he possessed: service, integrity, and a deep love for his neighborhood.
Former Iconic Shoe Store; Tirone Shoes:
Joe Tirone, whose family operated Tirone Shoes, recalled Scalici’s role in shaping Port Richmond’s retail landscape during the mid-20th century.
“Mr. Scalici was among the founding fathers who helped establish our shopping district alongside my father, uncle and many others dating back to the 1950s. It was an honor to see him recognized today,” Tirone said
Port Richmond-North Shore Alliance [Vice Chair]:
Mario Buonviaggio, vice chair of the Port Richmond North Shore Alliance, said Scalici’s dedication continues to influence today’s generation of local entrepreneurs.
“Because of Mr. Scalici, another generation of small business owners has found the courage to invest in Port Richmond and give their all to serve this community,” Buonviaggio said. “This is the highest recognition the City of New York can give, and it’s our way of saying thank you for your lifelong dedication to Port Richmond.”
