Born on Staten Island in 1932 to Fred and Mary McCarthy of New Brighton, Don graduated from St. Peter’s Boys H.S. class of 1950, then enrolled in St Peter’s College in Jersey City, where he was enrolled in the U.S. Army R.O.T.C. and upon graduating, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1954. He served in the
U.S. Army from 1954-1964 on Active Duty and Reserves, stationed primarily in Georgia and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.

Upon returning home from his time in the service, he became a NYC History Teacher in many schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island, including Port Richmond High School. After a 30 year career, he retired in 1991.
Don married his wife Marguerite in 1971 and had 5 boys, 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. Don was very active in the Staten Island community with many organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America Troop 37’s Scout Master, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 3, American Legion Cespino-Russo Post No. 1544, Disabled Veterans of America, a St. Vincent’s Hospital volunteer, and an active member of CYO Senior Center Port Richmond.

Don was a proud Port Richmond resident for over 25 years, always having his American and Irish flags flying each day outside his home on Castleton Ave. His tradition of service continued with some of his children and grandchildren serving in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Don passed away in 2005 and is buried along with his wife at St Peter’s Cemetery.
