John A. Nickel

John A. Nickel was born on March 10, 1926. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He was assigned to the USS LCI19 seeing combat in WWII.

He married Catherine Brannigan and had four children - John, Theresa, Margaret, and Robert. John lived and raised his family in Port Richmond. He bought a home on 22 Hooker Place where he spent his most of his life. He was fond of local neighborhood spots such as Denino's, Ralph's Ices, and Melone's Bakery.

He grew up enjoying the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. He would then go on to become a Mets fan when the Dodgers left NYC.

He was an elevator operator for the NYC Housing Authority where he worked until his retirement. He cherished his life with his wife, Catherine, until her passing in January of 2000. He also enjoyed the company of his seven grandchildren - Brian, Brandon, Susan, Thomas, Michael, Kelly, and Jonathan.

John passed on February 20, 2013.
